Media release: EEC welcomes long-needed fuel efficiency standards 05 February 2024

The EEC today welcomed the Albanese Government’s announcement that it will implement fuel efficiency standards for light vehicles this year.

Fuel efficiency standards – in place for almost fifty years in the United States – are a proven, demonstrated way to reduce emissions while saving money for consumers.

The EEC has advocated for the introduction of fuel efficiency standards since 2009 and congratulates the Government on tackling the dual challenges of fuel efficiency and quality standards holistically.

EEC CEO Luke Menzel noted the role of fuel efficiency standards in our response to climate change, saying, “We need to use every lever available to us to achieve our emissions reduction goals. Deploying fuel efficiency standards that save fuel and save people money is a no-brainer.”
