Efficiency Insight - June 2021

Efficiency Insight is the Energy Efficiency Council's monthly energy management update for members, partners and stakeholders.

I was catching up with an old friend from the sector this morning and we were discussing the profound impact COVID has had on the trajectory of our personal and professional lives, let alone our businesses, our industry and our country.

The fourth Melbourne lockdown has been a stark reminder that we're not out of this yet. The resilience of Victorians was well established last year. However what was noticeable this time was the sheer rate at which people adapted. We're getting good at the agility demanded of us by a rolling global pandemic.

It will be interesting to observe how these new skills might serve us in the decade to come. System change and society wide effort to respond to other big challenges like climate change certainly seems much more plausible then it did eighteen months ago. But that potential needs to be activated, on many different fronts, and more or less simultaneously.

Lots to do. Enjoy the newsletter this month.

Kind regards,

Luke Menzel

The global, post-pandemic context for HVAC

In an ideal world, policies on building energy efficiency would be seamlessly integrated with those on health and productivity. COVID-19 has forced governments and business to consider energy efficiency through the health lens, which presents a challenge for building owners and an opportunity for energy efficiency practitioners. The demand for air-conditioning will continue to grow strongly, as will that for healthy buildings.

‘Indirect evaporative cooling’ is a revolutionary cooling technology that is rapidly gaining traction because it dramatically reduces the cost of injecting fresh air into a building.
